Dave Mustaine announced that he has throat cancer
Following the announcement of Dave Mustaine 's throat cancer diagnosis , bassist David Ellefson commented on the matter.
“We were bracing ourselves for the bombshell, knowing we’d have to make the announcement,” Ellefson said. “Thoughts and prayers are always welcome. We’ve been in Nashville for the last month and have already worked on 50% of the album. Dave has started treatment, so things are progressing. It only became a reality when we realized he couldn’t continue treatment and still do big shows.”
He continued: “So we had to say, ‘we need to stop. Clean everything up and make this our number one priority.’ The announcement was exactly that. Just letting everyone know that some shows will have to be canceled until everything is resolved. Dave and I have been through a series of ups and downs: addictions, breakups, reconciliations. This is just another one of them.”
In an announcement by Mustaine, the band canceled most of their 2019 performances, except for the MegaCruise. The treatment has a 90% chance of success. “Meanwhile, Kiko, David, Dirk and I are in the studio working on the successor to Dystopia . I can't wait for everyone to hear it.”
“We are optimistic about the treatment and its success, which is usually good. This cancer is treatable. That's why this break is good. If we forced him to sing and perform, the result wouldn't be good.”
