David Ellefson almost joined Metallica twice. He was considered when Jason Newsted left the band and again after Cliff Burton .
Ellefson revealed the information in an interview with The Metal Voice . “I know there was a conversation regarding me. I know Lars [Ulrich] and Dave [Mustaine] talked. They were making a shortlist,” he said. “And, to be honest… I mean, Metallica is great. I’m a fan of theirs and a friend. I would work with them under any circumstances.”
Robert Trujillo won the bassist position. Dave Mustaine, who has a feud with Metallica, spoke about the matter. “When Cliff died, there was a moment when David’s name came up. I was a little worried,” he said. “I didn’t want to lose my bassist and certainly didn’t want another reason to be upset.”
