David Ellefson struggled to overcome drug addiction. Sober for three decades, the bassist and co-founder of Megadeth experienced some of the most important shows of his career while at the worst point of his addiction.
“When I got sober in 1990, it took a year for people to trust me again because I always let everyone down. The 18 months before that – starting with Monsters of Rock in Donington in 1988 – were incredibly dark,” he told Metal Hammer (via Loudwire) .
Returning to Megadeth in 2010 put the issue into perspective. “[I was] playing the biggest shows of my life, but in my worst condition because I was addicted to heroin. Every time we've played since then is an opportunity to set things right,” he concluded.
For 2021, Megadeth is expected to release their first studio album since Dystopia , which won a Grammy in 2017. According to Dave Mustaine , most of the recording has already been completed and the band should move on to the mixing stage soon.
