During an appearance on The Jeremy White Podcast , David Ellefson reflected on his time in Megadeth , working with Dave Mustaine , and much more.

He was asked about his first impressions of James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich when he met them, and David replied that they were nice. "Lars talked a lot, he talked more, and James didn't talk much. But they were very nice," he said.

David Ellefson stated that he wasn't quite sure how to react to the two artists, having heard about them before from Dave Mustaine, who at the time had a biased version of what it was like to be in a band with them. "He had his version, of course. It's one of those things – if you're my friend, you'll hate all my enemies and love all my friends too," said David.

“But these guys have been great and I’ve become good friends with them,” he said. “I got over a long time ago, like, ‘Hey, this loyalty thing of if I’m going to be in Megadeth, I have to hate Metallica somehow,’ what a load of bullshit. I fucking love them.”

David also mentioned that when he moved to Los Angeles, he discovered that actually playing music was the smallest part of the action. It was all about promoting the band. “Dave and I were homeless at the beginning, we were so poor,” he stated. The bassist added that he wondered how he was going to get food and survive. “Not to mention trying to book shows and make those things work. I think we had a good partnership,” he said.
