Recently, Far Out revisited a legendary interview that David Bowie gave to Playboy in 1976.
The recording is remarkable for a number of reasons. At the time, Bowie was addicted to cocaine and it took him a while to open up to the interviewer and let the conversation flow, but the most intriguing moment is the description of the musician composing an impromptu song during the interview.
When asked about the disagreement between him and his friend Elton John after referring to the singer as the "symbolic queen of rock," Bowie changed the subject and suggested writing a song instead of talking about it.
The musician then reportedly began writing a song about rock 'n' roll called "Audience" in which he quoted several artists, starting with Led Zeppelin in the verse " Led Zeppelin is solid / They make you like a wall" and moving on to mentions of Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder .
Unfortunately, recordings of the song cannot be found online, but the complete verse written by Bowie was: “ Led Zeppelin is growing, erasing our minds / They make us feel stony, they make us go blind / Hey, Stevie Wonder, there like a wall / So good to lean on, the hardest of all”
