David Bowie was the artist chosen to have a street named after him in Paris, Rue David Bowie.

It was inaugurated last Monday, the 8th – the same day Bowie would have turned 77 – and, according to the France 24 , it didn't need to be renamed, since the street didn't exist previously and is part of a renovation in the thirteenth arrondissement of Paris.

The idea for the tribute came from the mayor of the tenth arrondissement of Paris, Jérôme Coumet , a big Bowie fan.

He proposed the project in 2020, arguing that the artist had “a strong connection to the City of Lights.” David Bowie drew inspiration from the theatrical culture of the French avant-garde in his visual style.

CNN affiliate BFMTV , it’s truly moving,” said Karine. “Now, the only thing I find a shame is that there’s no housing, that we can’t live on David Bowie Street… I want a house on David Bowie Street.”

The publication also spoke with Jean, a journalist who claimed to be very familiar with the artist: “It’s a city he really liked, it’s a city with museums, it’s a city with nightclubs, it’s everything he loved,” said Jean. “He was someone who loved working with himself, who knew all the French writers, the philosophers and everything else. So he felt very much at home in Paris.”

Rue David Bowie is approximately 50 meters long, and France 24 states that there is no record of any other streets bearing the vocalist's name.
