David Bowie 's musical works have been sold to Warner Chappell Music, the company announced last Monday, the 3rd, amidst a wave of lucrative sales of rock star catalogs.
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but according to Variety , it exceeded $250 million (approximately R$1.4 billion). This includes rights to hundreds of songs from the entire career of the Rock Chameleon, spanning six decades.
“We are immensely proud to have been chosen as custodians of David Bowie’s legacy, a catalog of some of the most revolutionary, influential and enduring work in music history,” said Guy Moot , the company’s director, in a statement.
The announcement was made just days before what would have been David Bowie's 75th birthday on January 8th, and almost six years after his death on January 10th, 2016, following a long battle with cancer.
The sale comes amid a wave of similar deals by rock stars: in December, Bruce Springsteen announced the sale of his music catalog to Sony for around $500 million, and last year, Bob Dylan sold his catalog to Universal Music for around $300 million. Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac did the same with most of the band's catalog.
