David Bowie has become the artist with the highest vinyl sales in the 21st century with the release of the lost album Toy , released in January of this year, and two other albums in the Top 3.
According to an analysis published by the website Music Week , the album had the best sales in physical format in the week of its release, followed by Hunky Dory (1971), which returned to the ranking of albums with the highest sales in vinyl format for the first time since 2017, all thanks to the 50th anniversary of its release.
With the Bowie 75 campaign, commemorating the day the musician would have turned 75, the compilation Legacy (2016) also saw a significant increase in sales in recent weeks.
Statistics from Music Weekly conclude that the numbers establish "Bowie's prominence in the vinyl market, where he leads the sales chart for the decade and the century," with over 580,000 vinyl records sold in the 2000s alone – an impressive number considering the decline of physical media in recent decades, which is only now beginning to change with the return of vinyl.
This amount is even greater than the Beatles in the same period, with more than 530,000 records sold in the last 20 years. Although David Bowie did not appear in the Top 10 sales of 2021 in the United Kingdom, the musician managed to open a two-year gap with sales of new pressings of records.
