The track was recorded in 1982
This Monday, January 8th, David Bowie would have celebrated his 71st birthday if he were alive. To commemorate his birthday, the record label Parlophone Records released a previously unreleased demo by the musician.
The version of “Let's Dance” was recorded at Mountain Studios in Switzerland in 1982 with Nile Rodgers of Chic, producer David Richards, and bassist Erdal Kızılçay.
Upon releasing the track, Rodger issued a statement:
"I woke up on my first night in Montreux with David watching me. He had a guitar in his hand and said, 'Nile, darling, I think this is a HIT!'".
This recording is the first indication of what we would do together, when I took folk music and transformed it into something the whole world would dance to, and wouldn't stop dancing to for the next 35 years! It became a foundation not only for Let's Dance but for the entire album.
The time we spent mixing before Christmas was filled with tears because it felt like David was in the room with us. Congratulations, David, I love you and we all love you.”
"Let's Dance" is part of the album of the same name released in 1983. Listen to the demo below:
