Dave Mustaine says he didn't realize the band played Metallica at the Grammys

See the statement.

In an interview with Radio.com, Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine commented more extensively on the Grammy incident, when, upon announcing Megadeth as the winner, the home band began playing Metallica's "Master of Puppets.".

Last week, Mustaine even tweeted a good response, saying that the band wasn't capable of playing Megadeth. In the new interview, the musician explained more about what happened, saying that he didn't realize it:

“You know, I didn’t even realize it. It just seemed like background music to me. The funny thing is, when I got back and listened to my speech, I heard the music and I was like, ‘Wow!’ Everyone was asking me, ‘What about the Metallica thing?’ and I was like, ‘I didn’t hear it, I only saw it,’ ‘How could you not have heard it?!’ I didn’t know what they were talking about. I thought everyone was talking about the Metallica performance. Because we left afterwards. By the time they were doing the thing with Lady Gaga, we were already across the street having dinner. So I went to watch my speech and I was like, ‘Wow!’”.

“I didn’t care at all. It’s a house band, they do covers. They probably thought, ‘We don’t know any Megadeth songs, let’s play a Metallica song.’ But I went back to listen and thought, ‘My God, this is the worst version of Master of Puppets I’ve ever heard in my life.’”.

“They could have played a Cyndi Lauper song, I was just happy to be up there. It’s about being recognized.”
