The musician also spoke about winning his Grammy award
Dave Mustaine recalled during an interview with Rolling Stone the moment he wrote the riff for the track "The Four Horsemen" – also known by its original version "The Mechanix" – during his time with Metallica.
“Cliff Burton was a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. And I remember driving to rehearsal one day. We were listening to 'Sweet Home Alabama.' And Lars [Ulrich] said, 'Dude, we need to tone that part down!' And I turned around and said, 'Okay,' and played the riff from 'Sweet Home Alabama.' I was playing 'Sweet Home Alabama' and he didn't know it. And then he said, 'That's brilliant!' And I kept playing. Dave Mustaine and Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote 'The Four Horsemen.'”
When asked about winning his first Grammy, Mustaine took the opportunity to, once again, say that he hadn't realized the organizers were playing Metallica as they went up to receive the award: "At least they didn't write 'Metallica' on the Grammy!"
Dave Mustaine was fired from Metallica in 1983, and although he revealed that he harbored some resentment towards the band for a while, today he confesses that the feud and competition between the two groups and their members is an "illusion."
