Dave Mustaine has made his position clear on one of the most discussed topics among fans after the announcement of the farewell tour. The musician assures that there will be no special invitations for former Megadeth at any show.
In an interview with Guitar World , the Megadeth frontman stated that, although the band has already brought back guitarist Marty Friedman for recent shows , they do not intend to repeat the formula with other former members.
“And, I mean, let’s look at the other people we’ve played with… there are a lot. [Laughs]. It would be a huge undertaking. I don’t think I want to do that. I prefer to continue doing what we’re doing and let the fans experience Megadeth’s music and be happy with it. It’s not a ‘puppet show Megadeth’.”.
Former member's behavior prevents Megadeth reunion
Dave Mustaine wants to maintain the focus on the current lineup and the repertoire that established Megadeth as one of the pillars of world thrash metal. Previously, the musician told the program Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk that he doesn't believe it's possible to reunite former members due to the past behavior of one of the band's ex-members.
“Well, I really can’t do that, because of the behavior of one of the band members in the past. I just can’t. Because, firstly, it would be unfair to the other band members if I didn’t play with them as well. […] And I probably wouldn’t have a problem playing with either of the members of those two lineups, except for the fact that Gar [ Samuelson , former drummer 1984–1987] passed away, and I just won’t do anything that might seem unfair to the other band members,” he stated [transcription via Blabbermouth ].
Although Mustaine didn't directly name the person he was referring to, many point to former bassist David Ellefson , who was fired in 2021 after the release of an intimate video considered scandalous. This episode strained his relationship with the band , which gives meaning to Dave's statement about "past behavior." Meanwhile, Ellefson has expressed in other interviews his desire to participate in Megadeth's final tour, if invited.
Megadeth has already confirmed the release of a final album in January , and their farewell tour will begin in 2026. In Brazil, the band has confirmed a single performance on May 2nd at Espaço Unimed in São Paulo. Tickets are already sold out.
