Mustaine is organizing himself to gain more recognition for metal at the Grammys

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine is "fighting" to secure another heavy metal category at the Grammy Awards.

The Recording Academy, organizer of the Grammy Awards, announced a restructuring of the awards in 2011. As a result, it merged the "Best Metal" and "Best Hard Rock" performance awards, creating the "Best Metal Performance" category. This category is among those that are not televised.

Mustaine, who won his first Grammy in 2017 for the album Dystopia , said in an interview that metal “deserves” to have another category at the event. “I stopped going to the Grammys because you have to sit there and go through 30 categories of Latin Jazz. A few years ago some producers almost got another metal category. I called them and said, ‘We’ll get it.’ So, in 2020 we’ll fight. We’ll get every metal label we know to petition the Grammys to give us another category.”

He added: “My album was one of the Top 25 albums of the year around the world. Don’t tell me we don’t deserve another category.”.
