Dave Mustaine gave his first interview to talk about the cancer that sidelined him from Megadeth . He detailed his treatment and talked about how he reconnected with James Hetfield of Metallica .
“I’m on the receiving end of most of this treatment, and I feel very strong. After the radiation, the guy said all my results were great. ‘You look like you’re in stage 1 and you should be in stage 3 now.’ And then the oncologist said the same thing: ‘You look very strong.’ So we continued with the process.”
Dave Mustaine also revealed that he discovered the cancer after feeling something strange in his mouth. According to him, his teeth are extremely sensitive, which led him to believe that the problem was in that area.
“There are people around the world praying for me. I take very good care of myself, and I don’t know how anyone could expect any other result than this, knowing me. I am never satisfied with anything less than success or, in this case, victory.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, Dave Mustaine also revealed that James Hetfield of Metallica was one of the people who stood by his side.
The musician was part of the band in the 80s and was fired in a less than amicable atmosphere. Over the years, there has been much talk about a continuing animosity between the two, but Mustaine claims that this no longer exists.
“I received so much from people I didn’t expect and didn’t even know cared. Most notably, I received a message from my older brother, James Hetfield, and I was so, so happy to hear from him. Contrary to what many people say and contrary to our history, I love James, and I know James loves me and cares about me. You can see that when the moment of truth arrives and I tell the world I have a serious illness. Who comes to stand by my side? James.”
