Dave Lombardo: "Even with all the money in the world, you couldn't retire me."

"I'm not giving up the drumsticks, man. Those sons of bitches are going to die with me," he states

Being a great musician requires a lot of brainpower, a lot of talent, and a lot of physical strength—a recipe that can eventually become very tiring. But for drummer Dave Lombardo , even with the challenges of time, retirement is not in his plans.

In an interview with Ultimate Guitar , the artist surprised everyone by revealing what he hoped his legacy would be after he hung up his drumsticks: “I’m not giving up the drumsticks, man. Those sons of bitches are gonna die with me. Damn, I’m not going to retire. Even with all the money in the world, you couldn’t retire me.”

“I love what I do,” he continues. “I love music. Musicians don’t retire, they just move on to another band or something,” he later added. “I don’t believe in that word [retirement]. Buddy Rich … all those guys played until they were 80 years old. That’s something I’ve had in my mind since I was a kid, being inspired by those older guys – Gene Krupa , Buddy Rich. Ed Shaughnessy wrote me a beautiful letter – we hung out – he played for several years on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson . He played well until his later years. We loved it. It’s good for our health. It’s good for our lungs and for strengthening our upper body.”
