Last Wednesday, the 8th, Dave Lombardo , co-founder of Slayer , announced his first solo album, Rites Of Percussion , which will be released on May 5th via Ipecac Recordings . To celebrate the news, the drummer released the first single, "Journey Of The Host".
“ Mike Patton Tito Puente album Top Percussion (1958) . I was already familiar with Tito and was a little shocked that Patton was so musically diverse, and that he surrounded himself with like-minded musicians. That inspired me. I had ideas that I recorded over the years, but Patton kept insisting that I had to make a 'drum album'. So, the idea behind the album has been in the works for years. I just had to find the right time to do it,” he revealed in a statement released to the press.
The new album was mixed in early 2022 by David A. Lombardo , Dave's own son. The instruments used in the production process were diverse: Native American drums, Chinese and symphonic gongs, woodblocks, djembes, shakers, timbales, and more. Pre-orders are now available .
“When the pandemic hit, I thought, ‘Well, I can’t tour right now.’ I immediately started working on the album. It was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. I had my studio, my complete drum kit. My house became a place where I could be free and creative. On the one hand, the touring part of my livelihood had been taken away, but on the other hand, I finally had time to educate myself on different software and recording techniques. It was a very educational and rewarding experience!”
