In a recent interview on the Speak N' Destroy Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo revealed that he almost joined Megadeth in 1987 to replace Gar Samuelson.
Dave ] Mustaine probably doesn’t remember this, but they had toured with Alice Cooper during the Peace Sells . And I went to Long Beach Arena [in March 1987] and met them,” he recalls, “I think it was a very difficult period for them. I had heard rumors about drugs and things like that, but I kept an eye on them, but they didn’t seem healthy. I didn’t see a healthy path for me [with them].”
