Dave Grohl revealed in an interview that he wrote a song for Ozzy Osbourne, but the singer decided not to record it. "My Tortured Soul" is part of the underground album Probot.

radio Kerrang! Foo Fighters says that despite the initial rejection, the song was eventually used. Recalling the moment, he says:

"Sharon was kind of calling a lot of people to see if they wanted to help write songs with Ozzy."

"So I wrote this instrumental that was almost like a Melvins song, it was super heavy, and I thought, 'This would be really cool if Ozzy sang over it.' But they never chose it, they never used it."

At the time, Ozzy was finishing the album Down to Earth (2001). The team involved included names like Mick Jones (Foreigner) and collaborators from Aerosmith.

Dave Grohl and the birth of Probot

While the Foo Fighters were touring with their lighter songs, Grohl was experiencing an internal conflict.

“I found myself listening to Sepultura’s Chaos AD before going on stage, and then I’d sing Learn To Fly. I’d think, ‘What am I doing with my life, man?’”.

In the end, the song that Ozzy didn't use wasn't thrown away. It resurfaced as "My Tortured Soul," gaining lyrics and vocals by Eric Wagner (vocalist of Trouble). The track became one of the highlights of the album Probot (2004), a project that brought together legends like Lemmy Kilmister, King Diamond , and Max Cavalera.

What began as a commercial rejection ended up becoming a fundamental piece of one of the most unexpected and respected metal albums of the decade.
