When someone declines an invitation that many would entice, the burning question remains: why?
Dave Grohl 's case Tom Petty 's band Nirvana broke up . In a recent interview on the Howard Stern Show , the Foo Fighters frontman clarified the rumors surrounding the episode.
“He was really cool, very discreet and down-to-earth. He was really very nice,” he recalls of his time with Petty. “We played on SNL [ Saturday Night Live ] and then he was basically like, ‘Man, that was good and it would be a shame if that was the only time we did that.’ And then he called me at home and said, ‘If you want, this is how we do it. You get your own bus and we don’t tour much and blah, blah, blah.’ He was explaining if you’re into doing this, come out and let’s do this for a while.”
However, the first Foo Fighters album was already on Grohl's radar. “I had just started doing this and it felt strange going back to the drums because it reminded me of being in Nirvana and that would have been sad for me personally. It would have been an exciting thing to be behind the drums every night and not have Kurt [Cobain] there, so I said, 'Nah, screw it. I'll try something else.'”
During the conversation, Grohl was asked if the rumor that he had also been invited to join Pearl Jam was true; however, it is not fake news . "I know those guys, but they never asked me to play drums with them. I played with them on stage in Australia, but no, they didn't call me."
