Dave Grohl 's disco influences began long before the Foo Fighters announced their alter ego Dee Gees , in homage to the Bee Gees , and the album Hail Satin . According to the musician, the musical genre influenced Nirvana .
In a conversation with Pharrell Williams on the series From Cradle to Stage , presented by Grohl alongside his mother Virginia on the Paramount+ streaming platform, the former Nirvana drummer revealed that he drew inspiration from groups like The Gap Band and Cameo for the percussion on the album Nevermind .

“Stop saying I’m a good drummer, I’m the most basic drummer of all. If you listen to Nevermind (…), it’s all old records. That’s it,” Grohl said. “Nobody makes that connection.”
According to Loudwire , the clip from the episode recently went viral on Twitter and makes the influence evident by comparing the drumming of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to "Early in the Morning" by The Gap Band. Watch it below.
