Dave Grohl has finally publicly commented on drummer Josh Freese's from the Foo Fighters.
In an interview with The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music 1 [via Blabbermouth ], Grohl detailed the reasons that led to the departure and clarified that the decision was made by mutual agreement and that the change is part of a new internal direction for the group.
“During those six or seven months, as a band, we talked about what to do next, a new direction, and we thought, ‘Okay, let’s call Josh and let him know we’re moving forward with a different drummer.’ The change didn’t happen overnight. We called, as a band, all of us called, it wasn’t just me. Basically, we called Josh and said, ‘Man, that was amazing. It was awesome, thank you so much, but we’re going to move on and find another drummer,’” said Dave Grohl.
The Foo Fighters frontman avoided treating the episode as a conflict, emphasizing the professional respect between the parties. "Since then, a lot has been said about it, but I think Josh summed it up best when he said he didn't feel our music really resonated with him, and that's very important," he added.
Previously, when announcing his departure from the Foo Fighters , Josh Freese revealed in an Instagram post that the band had informed him earlier that week that they had chosen to "go in a different direction with their drummer." According to him, the band offered no explanation.
Dave Grohl talks about Taylor Hawkins
Taylor Hawkins ' death , joining the band for shows and official engagements. Dave Grohl also said how difficult it is to find a replacement for Hawkins.
“We had Taylor Hawkins as our drummer for 25 years and, besides being an incredible drummer, he was an extraordinary person. He was an amazing human being and was like a brother to us. He was our best friend. So, continuing after Taylor was really complicated, not only for us, but for any drummer who would come in to take his place… We always talk about him every day. In everything we do, we want to have that energy — we want to have that energy for Taylor,” he confessed.
Currently, the Foo Fighters are preparing for the release of their 12th studio album, titled Your Favorite Toy , scheduled for April 24th. The band's lineup includes Dave Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, guitarists Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear , keyboardist Rami Jaffee and new drummer Ilan Rubin , who joined in 2025 after Josh Freese's departure.
