“When Warren mentioned the song, my initial reaction was, ‘I can’t do that’,” said Grohl
Dave Grohl had just finished performing the grand "Play" in North Carolina while the snow fell relentlessly into the early hours of the morning. It was the after-party for Warren Haynes . At 4 a.m., Grohl realized he wouldn't be able to get home because of the snow. "We need to find another place to play," he thought.
Another performance was scheduled for the following day, and in less than 12 hours, 1,050 people gathered at the Orange Peele house. The re-presentation of "Play" with members of Queens of the Stone Age and Jane's Addiction went as planned. The surprise came when Haynes took the stage and the band began playing Nirvana's "All Apologies."
“Warren said, ‘Do you want to do ‘All Apologise’?’ That used to be a dangerous and delicate question, for good reason,” Grohl recounted. “‘I can’t do it. I shouldn’t do it.’ But when I think about how much that song means to so many people – the joy and the love should be shared. So, as we were playing, the audience started singing along. And I started crying and trying to hold back – what a beautiful moment. Who am I to stop people from having that beautiful moment?”
