Dave Grohl admits he was afraid of being fired from Nirvana; find out more

“So there was this real insecurity of the type. 'I'm not good enough. They'll find someone else,'” reveals the artist

We know that very talented people, from time to time, doubt their own potential, believing they are not good enough or feeling like they shouldn't be there. This feeling is so common that it affects even big rock stars, as was the case with Dave Grohl during his time in Nirvana .

In an interview with Matt Wilkinson of Apple Music , the musician explains, “I joined Nirvana, I was their fifth drummer, right? They had a lot of drummers before me and some of them were more, I don't know, more in the band than others. So, when I joined the band, I didn't know Krist [Novoselic] and Kurt [Cobain] . And when we met and started playing, it became clear that when we got together to play, it worked really well, and we sounded like what most people know now from the Nirvana sound. That's how we were.”

“But you just meet these people and it didn’t take long… It was almost exactly a year from when I joined until Nevermind came out. And after it came out, it was like things happened so quickly. The band got really big (…) All the bands I was in before were with friends I’d known for a long time,” says Dave.

“You’re so nervous that you might get fired or that they’ll quit. I basically didn’t want to get fired. And so I was doing my best to keep this thing from disappearing. So there was this real insecurity of the type ‘I’m not good enough. They’ll find someone else.’”

Fortunately, Grohl overcame challenges as the frontman of the Foo Fighters , transforming the band (on which he recorded all the instruments and vocals on their first solo album, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary) into one of the biggest rock groups in the world. Inspiring!
