In a new BBC documentary called When Nirvana Came To Britain , Dave Grohl made a painful revelation about the dreams he still has about his time in Nirvana and the fact that even today, 27 years later, he still hasn't fully recovered from the death of his friend and bandmate Kurt Cobain .
Grohl reports that the circumstances surrounding Cobain's death are still an open wound because now he needs to figure out how to talk to his daughters about it, since they are big Nirvana fans. “I’m still processing Kurt’s death because I need to explain it to my daughters, who love Nirvana. For most of the time I tried to process it and talk to my friends and family and they helped me, but now I feel like I need to help my children get through it. It’s a lifelong healing process,” Grohl confides.
“When I joined the band it was a lot of fun. I slept on Kurt’s living room couch, we rehearsed in a barn, set up our stuff and played our songs, and people were jumping around, sweating and hot. I really loved the connection and appreciation that the Nirvana audience had for the band,” Dave recalls.
“I still have dreams where we’re in Nirvana, where we’re still a band,” he admits. “I still dream that there’s an empty arena waiting for us to play. But I don’t sit at home and dwell on ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit.’ It’s just a reminder that the person responsible for all those beautiful songs is no longer with us. It’s bittersweet.”
