Anthrax announced at the end of last month that, for personal reasons, bassist Frank Bello would not be able to accompany the band on their South American tour, and would be replaced by Dan Lilker , who played on the band's first album, Fistful Of Metal (1984).
In a recent interview with Metal Mayhem ROC [transcription via Blabbermouth ], Dan Lilker commented on whether there are any long-term future plans for him to play with Anthrax. “Well, as far as I know, I’m just doing the 10 shows I was asked to do – the eight that are in Central and South America and then the two festivals in the US. It’s just a replacement for Frank – I want to make sure and emphasize that I’m not going back to the band, even though I formed it before. Ultimately, after 40 years, the idea is: ‘I’m doing my friends a favor and if that situation changes in the future, it won’t have anything to do with me taking any steps to do so,’ so to speak.”
Regarding how long it took him to accept the invitation, Lilker said: “Oh, I just said, ‘Sure, that sounds cool.’ And then I went to clarify that with the people I have to talk to here [at home and at work]. I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with these guys, helping them out, and having fun playing metal. Because I’m not playing in bands anymore, which is by choice, so doing occasional little forays like this is cool for me.”
The Latin American tour kicked off last Saturday night, the 13th, at MXMF The Metal Fest in Mexico City, marking the first appearance in 40 years with founding member and original bassist Dan Lilker .
