In an interview during a Female Metal Event in the Netherlands, Lacuna Coil vocalist Cristina Scabbia spoke about sexism in heavy metal. According to the band's leader, the genre still has a long way to go in terms of gender equality. Read her statement:
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we need more women in the scene. But it’s not because I only support bands led by women. It’s more because music is for everyone… Metal is basically the only style – because I can’t think of any other – that’s still a bit conservative when it comes to women in bands. It’s still like, ‘Oh, it’s Metal, it’s weird to have women in the band.’ And to me, that’s very strange. I mean, I’ve been doing this for almost twenty years and I’ve never thought of myself as a female element in the band; I always think of myself as… the band’s vocalist.”
