Cradle of Filth in São Paulo: Revisiting the past

Cradle Of Filth performed in São Paulo on March 24th

On a day of intense heat, and after 5 years without setting foot on Brazilian soil (their last visit was in 2013, promoting the album The Manticore and Other Horrors ), Cradle Of Filth came to São Paulo on tour promoting the album Cryptoriana, released in 2017 by Nuclear Blast.

With the venue partially full, a slight delay, and a rather uncomfortable temperature inside, the band, which blends Black Metal with symphonic and gothic elements, took to the stage to present a very diverse setlist, enough to leave any fan of the genre very satisfied.

The show began with one of the most powerful tracks the band has ever composed: “Gilded Cunt,” from the 2004 album Nymphetamine , has a very exciting and contagious Thrash Metal feel. The show continued with “Beneath the Howling Stars,” “Blackest Magick in Practice,” and “Heartbreak and Seance” from the new album Cryptoriana ( besides “Heartbreak and Seance,” the new album was represented by only one more song, “You Will Know The Lion by His Claw” ) , but it was with “Bathory Aria” from the classic album Cruelty & The Beast , and its eleven-minute duration, that the audience truly rose to their feet. In fact, there was no shortage of classics in this show. Cradle Of Filth's discography was beautifully represented, as in the title track from the album Dusk And Her Embrace , and in “The Death Of Love” and “The Promise Of Fever” from Damnation And A Day.

“Nymphetamine Fix”, probably one of the band's most famous songs, brought a bit of calm to the typical speed of Cradle Of Filth's music, with Lindsay Schoolcraft's delicate voice taking on the parts originally sung by Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre Of Tragedy, ex-Leaves Eyes) and announcing that the show was about to end, but not before the audience went wild with the last songs: “Her Ghost In The Fog”, “Born In a Burial Gown” and “From Cradle To Enslave”, three absolute and indisputable classics of the band.

Despite the balanced setlist, some good songs were left out, such as "Tonight In Flames" from Thornography, but nothing diminished the brilliance of the performance by a band that was clearly happy to be back in Brazil, especially guitarist Richard Shaw, with his facial expressions and gestures, a highly expressive musician on stage – this was the first time he came to Brazil with Cradle Of Filth – and bassist Daniel Firth.

Now, all we can do is hope that it doesn't take another five years for Cradle Of Filth to return to Brazil.
