Slipknot vocalist was asked about people's perceptions of the Heavy Metal audience, relating conservatism to Donald Trump's political message. Check out an excerpt from the interview:
“SPIN: The things that first drew attention to Trump were his controversial positions regarding the Hispanic community and Mexicans. It's funny that people would associate Metal with that prejudice, considering that many Metal idols are Latino, like Tom Araya from Slayer..
Corey Taylor: You're absolutely right. I think Heavy Metal and Hard Rock are bastions of freedom for misfit kids, kids who feel outside of mainstream society. So not only do we have kids of different ethnicities, but we have kids who were born truly poor, like me. Metal resonated with me because it was only when I grew up that I felt I had my own voice.
And this is where people are wrong: the metal fans who come to see our shows are some of the most open-minded, encouraging, kind, protective, and progressive people I've ever met. I never worry that something bad will happen at one of our shows. If an accident happens, that's different, but I never worry about fights or attacks because we look out for each other. The message that Donald Trump sends is so anti-Slipknot that it's not even funny, because we want people to unite, and everything he does is so divisive. Trying to equate Muslims with terrorists is trying to control and manipulate people. His views on Muslims and Latinos and his silence on the Black Lives Matter movement prove how unprepared he is to unite people. He's prepared to divide them, to control them.”
