Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor shared controversial opinions about new modern rock artists in a recent interview.
In a conversation for the most recent episode of the Cutter's Rockast , the artist stated, "I see some of these bands that sound like this or sound like that other guy or sound like that other guy, and it's just, like, well, they obviously listened to two albums that were released for a minute."
“But the ones that really frustrate me are those who take something that’s been around for a long time and basically rework it and call it new, even if it’s completely derivative,” he continues. “You know the band they’re ripping off, they’re not even trying to rip off a bunch of bands, they’re ripping off one band. But the younger generation takes them and says, ‘This is our blah, blah, blah,’ because they’re tired of hearing the old guys saying that the music that came before them was better. And I don’t know who’s right, but I know they’re both wrong, because we should encourage everything.”
“I’m just as bad. I’m the worst foggy old guy shaking a cane ever. And I hate everything. I hate new rock for the most part. I [hate] artists who failed in one genre and decided to go into rock… and I think he knows who he is. But that’s another story. I’m the worst. And I hate everything. And people are used to that from me, though. But I also encouraged the younger generation to think beyond the limits of what we hear. Do something that feels new, it doesn’t have to sound new, but it has to feel new. If it’s dead, then people will treat it like it’s dead, man,” he concludes.
