Corey Taylor explains the "anti-Metallica movement" among metal fans in the past: "They were being taken away from us."

The Slipknot vocalist recalled the feeling of "shock" when he first heard the 'Black Album' 30 years ago

In an interview with Knotfest.com , Corey Taylor celebrated the re-release of Metallica 's Black Album , where he appears on The Metallica Blacklist with a cover of "Holier Than Thou".

During the conversation, Taylor admitted that the first time he heard the Black Album , thirty years ago, it left him "shocked," but not in a positive way. "I was one of those young people who were expecting something more like …And Justice For All ," he says. "I remember hearing 'Enter Sandman' because it was playing everywhere and, in retrospect, we loved the single, but we were expecting more from the album."

“I got used to it over the years and now I can listen to the album and appreciate it as much as the first four. You can see the evolution and maybe that's maturity because we were unbearable back then. 'This doesn't sound like 'Creeping Death' or anything like that.' It was something different and we didn't know how to feel about it at the time, especially with a band [like Metallica].”

Corey Taylor also mentioned a certain feeling of jealousy towards Metallica and their sudden mainstream success instead of just being confined to the metal scene. “The more attention they got, the less they seemed to be ‘ours’ – they were being taken away from us! And I think that’s why I heard such a big anti-Metallica movement among us metal fans. I never turned my back on them, but I definitely looked for other things because it didn’t feel so special and so specifically ours anymore. But that was just being a kid.”

Over time, Taylor finally embraced the Black Album and today states that "Holier Than Thou," the song he participated in on the new version, is his favorite. Listen to the track sung by Corey Taylor:
