Iron Maiden guitarist's style is not new and has already been the subject of strong opinions expressed by journalist Eddie Trunk in 2009:
“I love Iron Maiden. But I have to talk about what has been obvious to so many people for so long: Nobody understands why the band tolerates Janick Gers's style on stage. I don't know him and I hear he's a nice guy, but he behaves on stage as if he were participating in the reality show 'Dancing with the Stars' and not playing guitar in Maiden.”.
"I'm sure he's talented and a nice guy, but he's very over-the-top and it hurts to see him on stage. I love some of the things he's written for Maiden and I'm not saying for a minute that he should leave the band, but someone dancing and spinning around with a guitar like he does seems very out of place and outside of what Iron Maiden is all about ," concludes the journalist.

Guitarist Adrian Smith defended Janick's stage performance style: “Some people like it. I think it's interesting to have this contrast of different styles and personalities in the band. We have to be very disciplined when we play because some arrangements are quite complex and we play very fast, and if I start messing around with my guitar, I would completely lose myself, so I don't. But Janick feels good doing it and he does it very well, and it's cool .
