Juliano Xavier plays in the band Lecher.
The Labor Public Prosecutor's Office announced on the 27th the imposition of a R$ 50,000 fine on the Urban and Social Development Company of Sorocaba (Urbes) for firing an employee due to "aesthetic discrimination." The victim in the case is the vocalist and bassist of the band Lecher, Juliano Afonso Costa Xavier, who was prevented from working as a traffic agent because of his long hair.
Xavier said he suffered during the process: “It’s regrettable that I had to go through this within the public administration itself. What can you expect from a government with this orientation? Fortunately, justice was served.”
The public body also denounced the existence of Urbes' internal regulations, which prohibit agents from wearing "adornments, piercings and tattoos that may impair personal presentation, as well as the use of earrings in the case of male agents" or "reporting to work with sideburns, beards or long hair, mustaches or disproportionate nails". Due to the regulation, the company was convicted of collective moral damages and must allocate the R$ 50,000 to the community.
The vocalist says he wants his job back: “I understand that I have the right to come back even with long hair, and I want to come back. I want to be the long-haired, yellow-haired guy.”
