Following the success of TikTok , the app's owners are reportedly working on developing a new music streaming platform called Feilo to compete with Spotify and Apple Music in China.
According to the tech news website 36kr , the Chinese internet technology company ByteDance has been working on Project Feilo since 2019, an idea conceived by the Vice President of Products and Strategies, Alex Zhu .
“Byte began exploring the music business in 2019 and even launched a home music streaming service codenamed W , but the development process failed due to a serious lack of copyright and vague product positioning,” wrote 36kr.
"The project was initially positioned as a music player, but due to insufficient music rights, it was later transformed into a community music product, and, due to its narrow product positioning, it was internally tested for about a year and discontinued in 2020.".
