Pastor Sarah Sheeva , daughter of Baby do Brasil and Pepeu Gomes , recently caused a major stir on the internet by claiming that Coldplay's music is the devil's music.
“Don’t be mistaken, in heaven they don’t play ‘Capetaplay,’ God’s angels don’t sing ‘Coldinferno,’ they don’t like it, but you do, you like it, and you won’t give it up… On the big day you won’t be able to say that God didn’t use someone to warn you, because I’m here doing this work on His orders,” said the nun.
Sarah Sheeva further elaborated on her opinion, stating that the danger of the British band lies in their lovely melodies: “Anyone who thinks the devil is so stupid as to reveal himself in the lyrics of one of his songs is mistaken. It's NEVER the LYRICS that minister. What ministers is the MELODY. The lyrics enter 'ONLY' your mind (soul, understanding), however, the melody enters your human spirit, and ministers and RELEASES something within you that you don't discern with your mind/soul. The effect of listening to this band will come into your life in the coming months; just observe your inner struggles increasing, your strength fading, and the temptations becoming stronger and stronger.”.
The controversy began when the pastor responded to a post on Instagram by content creator Leo Souza, who stated that "Coldplay is more devout than many believers."
Most social media users found the situation amusing, but some took it more seriously. "Indeed, the effect of music brings back memories, sensations, feelings, and emotions, and personally, the pastor was right. Who among us humans doesn't have one of those reactions that we don't understand how it can affect us?" agreed one internet user.
Coldplay is currently touring Brazil promoting their latest album Music of the Spheres (2021). With a total of 11 shows, the group is expected to attract around four million people.
