One of the great inspirations for the greatest metal compositions, and music in general, is relationships, whether good or bad. And Dave Mustaine , from Megadeth , didn't escape this stereotype of the passionate rocker, and has written several songs for his ex-fiancée, Diana Aragon , with whom he had a very turbulent relationship.
Perhaps
the most famous song, and the one that best explains his feelings about what they both experienced, is the classic, "Tornado of Souls".
is
on my favorite Megadeth album, "Rust in Peace", and is one of the band's great classics. Besides being musically impeccable and having one of the best solos in thrash metal, it also has very heavy lyrics.
,
and how he got out of it.
He
believed his existence was in that relationship, that he couldn't live without her; he was trapped in the eye of the storm and wouldn't be able to escape that feeling. Their relationship was anything but stable, and Diana was very abusive towards him, as well as being a drug addict, just like him.
"
No more whirlwind romances for me. If I fall into that situation again, I'll be very aware now and check the temperature before getting involved."
"
No more living trapped inside myself.
In her way, I will surely die."
Several friends of the couple said that she lived like a rockstar, as much as, or even more than, Mustaine himself, and that she was always on edge and constantly using drugs.
“
This morning I made the call.
The one that would end it all.
I hung up the phone, and wanted to cry.”
His wanting to cry doesn't mean he didn't love his wife, but as the musician himself stated, she wasn't good for herself.
“
My future looks so bright.
Now I think I see the light.”
After
leaving that relationship, Mustaine was actually able to look at it from the outside with a different perspective, and saw that he had made the right decision.
“But now I'm safe in the eye of the storm.”
This part of the song became a cathartic release for Mustaine, where he finally freed himself from his toxic and consuming relationship.
