Testament vocalist Chuck Billy spoke in an interview with Eonmusic about auditioning for Sepultura in 1996, after Max Cavalera left the band. Check out his statement:
“Yes, that time was a little before Testament made the album 'Demonic', so we had finished our contract with Atlantic Records and were looking for a new one. We didn't have any deal yet, so at the last minute I said, 'You know what? Maybe I should find a band that's solid, that will tour and continue', and at that moment Sepultura was doing auditions, and I think it was at the end of the auditions that I decided, 'Okay, I'll do this'. I think I did three songs, I did 'Refuse/Resist', 'Territory' and I did my version of 'Choke' and showed them. But in the end they had already made their decision with Derrick, which in the end, was probably the way it should have been anyway.”
Billy concludes by saying that he doesn't know what he would have done if he had been chosen: “I don't know if I was prepared, if they had said 'okay, you're in' I would have had to say 'well, let me think about it!'. I don't know what I would have done. It was very much a spur-of-the-moment thing, like 'what do I have to lose?'."
