The vocalist took the stage with the group in 2017
Muse the road for 24 years, with seven studio albums released and a long list of festivals under their belt. But the role of rock star doesn't replace the passion of a fan. In an interview with Wikimetal, bassist Chris Wolstenholme spoke about his recent experience playing live with Brian Johnson AC/DC vocalist , who is currently away from the band due to hearing problems.
“I think that was the highlight of the tour. Everyone knows Brian, everyone knows 'Back in Black'. It was an honor ,” he said about the August 2017 performance at the Reading and Leeds Festival. The occasion marked the first time in 18 months that Johnson had sung an AC/DC song live. “Even though he was in difficult conditions, he gave his all.” Watch a visual record of the moment below.
In addition to being the year the band got to play with Johnson, 2017 also marked Muse's musical comeback. "Dig Down" was the British band's first release since the 2015 Drones
More than just a single, the song defined a revolution in the group's music production. The focus shifted from albums to individual tracks, a change considered positive by the bassist. "We were able to experiment in the studio. We expanded our musical boundaries and invested energy in each track, which sometimes doesn't happen when producing an album."
On February 15th, Muse released "Thought Contagion," which, despite not being tied to the concept of an LP, follows the technological and nostalgic aesthetic of "Dig Down." Both music videos involve TVs, video games, and the time period setting that was most popular in the 2010s: the 1980s.
“The 1980s inspire us because of all the classic elements. And also because that's when we grew up ,” Wolstenholme opined. And the theme will continue to be predominant in upcoming releases. In an interview with Beats 1, vocalist Matt Bellamy revealed that the next single, “Algorithm,” is a “mixture of classical piano with 1980s synthesizers and computer game music.”
Now, we wait to see what Bellamy, Wolstenholme, and drummer Dom Holward have taken from this new musical experience. Listen to their latest singles, “Dig Down” and “Thought Contagion,” below.
