Children of Bodom was one of the great bands in the history of death metal , and today we're going to explain a little about the origin of the band's name, and also of a song of the same name that they recorded.
The song is on the album * Hatebreeder
*
, in which several songs were written taking the band's name as inspiration. It refers to the Lake Bodom murders, which took place in Finland, more specifically in the city of Espoo.
Europe
, mainly because it remains unsolved to this day. On June 4, 1960, four young people decided to camp near Lake Bodom and spent the night there.
Maila Irmeli Björklund and Anja Tuulikki Mäki, both 15 years old, and their boyfriends Seppo Antero Boisman and Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson , both 18 years old.
However
, the following day, three of them were found dead from stabbings and head trauma inside their tents, and the fourth young man, Nils Gustafsson, was found with a concussion, fractures to his jaw and facial bones, and contusions to his face, but still alive.
The
investigations
into the crime were quite troubled, and the murder weapons were never found. Some curious facts include that the killer took the key to one of the victims' motorcycles but left the motorcycle behind, and he took another victim's sneakers but didn't take them either; he hid them 500 meters from the crime scene.
the
only survivor of the massacre, stated that after he managed to leave the tent, he saw a person dressed in black with bright red eyes walking away.
Several
theories about the murders have been discussed over the years, including the fact that the wounded young man was arrested in 2004, but was later acquitted and even received compensation from the Finnish state for the mental suffering caused to him.
"
Children of Bodom" speaks about the murder, but from a different perspective, telling about the spirits of the victims and their thirst for revenge.
"Something wild
survived!"
"Wild" in English is "wild," and it's widely speculated that this is where the nickname of the band's founding member, Alexi Laiho , who was called "Wildchild," comes from.
"
We gather our souls to exalt the triumph of Death […]
Sons of Bodom
rise up
Running violently, massacring
With a sense of desire
From the dawn of the past
Among the victims who died
Something wild
Survived!"
