Drummer comments on Anselmo's action
Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante is the latest musician to comment on Phil Anselmo's situation, who has been criticized by musicians and the metal industry for his actions at Dimebash, where the vocalist made a Nazi salute and shouted 'white power' .
Why Phil Anselmo's explosion of white power should not be ignored
In an interview with the Australian radio program “Moshpit”, Benante commented:
“I think Philip made a mistake. I think there were other things… Other factors in the situation that people probably didn’t see. And I’ve known Philip Anselmo forever, and I don’t think he’s racist. I think he became the poster boy for it. And I know it shocked a lot of people, and made a lot of people furious. But I feel he’s genuinely sorry for saying something like that. And yes, he’s my friend.”.
Scott Ian, guitarist for Anthrax, had already spoken out about the incident , suggesting that Anselmo should make donations to charities in addition to apologizing. In an interview with the blog Sticks For Stones, Ian commented: “My attitude towards all of this is, silence is complicity. If you don't say something about it, you're tolerating it, and I can't tolerate that at all.”
