In the new Wikimetal poll, Black Sabbath's " Changes "Fade To Black" tied as the saddest metal songs, with only 3 votes separating them. Both received 29% of the votes. In third place was "A Tout Le Monde ," with 16%.
Guitarist Tony Iommi spoke about the composition of " Changes" in an interview with Guitar World last year: “It’s a sad track. We were staying in a house that had a room with a piano. It was during the time we were snorting cocaine and staying up late. And I just started playing and the idea came to me. We had a Mellotron and Geezer started playing the orchestrations. It fit well, and the composition was quite quick, considering we had never done anything like that before.”
Fade To Black , which won the latest Wikimetal poll as the best song on “Ride The Lightning”, was also composed during sad times: “I was depressed at the time because all our equipment had been stolen, and we had been kicked out of our manager's house for breaking things and drinking everything he had. It's a suicide song, and we received a lot of criticism for it, as if young people were going to kill themselves because of the song. But we received many letters talking about how people related to the song, and how it made them feel better ,” said James Hetfield in an interview.
