Canisso , bassist for the band Raimundos , wrote an article about his personal history with metal on Wikimetal in 2012. In the text, the musician recounted his first encounters with the genre, his favorite bands from each era, and commented on Brazilian bands.

In homage to the artist, who died last Monday, the 13th, at the age of 57 , we reproduce in full the text written by Canisso, originally published on June 5, 2012.

"My love affair with Metal begins in the late 1970s. I used to spend my holidays in Rio de Janeiro, where my older cousins were already into Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Rush, AC/DC, etc."

In the eighties, I distanced myself a bit [from the style], I listened more to Punk and Hardcore – Dead Kennedys, Ramones and Black Flag, but there was always room in my heart for Motörhead and Van Halen.

In the late eighties, the Crossover movement occurred, where the first fusions of Punk and Metal began to emerge. Speed Metal arose, culminating in Thrash Metal, which combined the best of both styles.

And then bands emerged that reawakened my interest in Metal, like Metallica, Sepultura, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, among others. And on the Punk side, there was Suicidal Tendencies, Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, and Ratos de Porão; it was a perfect time: Stormtroopers of Death playing at a party and then MINISTRY would play.

Next came Grunge, and some bands managed to combine the aggression of Punk with the technique of Metal. The next "fusion" that caught my attention was the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who opened another path followed by Faith No More, Korn, etc.

I like heavy and fast music, NYC Hardcore, Biohazard, some Californian Hardcore like NOFX, No Use For a Name, Rollins Band and Bad Religion, some SKA, Specials, Madness, Rancid, Sublime…

My musical taste is completely eclectic, predominantly within the rock universe, of course, but one needs objectivity to recognize the value of a Zé Ramalho, a Raul Seixas, or even a Zenilton.

I've always liked Metal, I've always had a great appreciation for the genre, and I'm proud to acknowledge that we have world-class bands in the style. I won't mention names so as not to leave anyone out, but some [bands] are much more valued abroad than here. But what can you do, that's the life of those who chose to play what they like and not what makes money, right? Strength to this country of Tchu and Tchá. At least we have Wikimetal on our side in this fight… Canisso.”
