Candlemass announces new album and releases single “Scandinavian Gods”

This album is the band's second since the return of vocalist Johan Längquist.

The doom metal band Candlemass has announced that they will release their album Sweet Evil Sun on November 18th. To celebrate the news, the group released the first single, "Scandinavian Gods".

In the preview of the release, the presence of vocalist Johan Längquist is emphasized. Längquist participated in the band's acclaimed first album in 1986 and only returned in 2018. In 2019 he released a project with the band The Door to Doom and is now preparing for the group's fourteenth album.

Speaking about the song, guitarist and mastermind behind the group Leif Edling explained: “[The song] is about heritage and the future and the fact that sometimes it’s absolutely necessary to let go of, or at least doubt, your old gods. It’s about the difficulty in that, and the irony in the fact that you find yourself returning to them repeatedly, to those dark circles and the forgetting of the past. Where do we want to be? What should we believe in? Do we need them to build a better future?”

Candlemass spent 18 months recording Sweet Evil Sun and, according to the band, the album seeks to recapture "all the greatness of their early years, exploring themes of ambition and struggle, hope and failure."

Sweet Evil Sun follows The Door to Doom (2019) and is now available for pre-order.
