Juan Brujo and the beginning of Brujeria
In a 2015 interview with The Moshville Times , Brujo said that the band's initial idea was not to tour. “We just wanted to make some records. What it was, in Los Angeles in 1989, there was a metal scene that included grind and hardcore. There was a band called Terrorizer, and they wouldn't let them play in regular clubs, so they played in backyards in the Mexican parts of the city. We'd go—to someone's backyard—and none of the fans watching the show spoke English. All these Mexicans—there are a lot of Mexicans in Los Angeles, so we just thought, 'We have to start a band that sings in Spanish. Give them what they want.'”
Furthermore, Brujo recounted that when the band started, they just wanted to play. But as soon as they recorded their first songs, success was instant. The day after they recorded their first song, a Mexican man who barely spoke English showed up with a tattoo of the band.
