Bruce Dickinson, in an interview with the website songfacts , spoke about his current vocal condition, given his battle with throat cancer. Bruce also commented on the techniques each person uses to express what the music means, and that high notes aren't always necessary for a song to work.
According to him, the singers he admires most are those with their musical technique and their ability to convey the necessary emotion to the audience. When asked about the singers he admires today, he replied:
"The voices I admire most these days are those who, sadly, are no longer with us. Chris Cornell was one of the best I've ever heard in any generation. And, unfortunately, he's gone. The guy from Angra [ Andre Matos ] is gone too."
Dickinson continues: “All of these musicians were truly able to move people. They could shout and scream like the best, but they had the ability to touch people's souls deeply with their voices.”
Bruce Dickinson's fascination with Chris Cornell
Despite mentioning the Brazilian Andre Matos, he couldn't hide his fascination with Chris Cornell, who came from the Seattle grunge generation, first with Soundgarden and then with Audioslave . In 2006, he became known to the general public with the theme song for the James Bond film .
According to Bruce: “One of my favorite Chris Cornell performances, the most touching, was doing the James Bond theme 'You Know My Name' from the 2006 film Casino Royale. That's a great vocal performance. And it's a somewhat funny fact, because he shares this honor of great vocal performances with Tom Jones , who did Thunderball .”
Iron Maiden 's vocalist also mentions his admiration for the great Ronnie James Dio and laments never having met Chris Cornell personally: "Chris left this life, leaving us before he could begin to give his best, I think. It's a very sad fact," Bruce concludes.
