The nickname was given by a hater of the vocalist.
In an interview with Eddie Trunk, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson explained the story behind his nickname, Air-Raid Siren.
He explains that in the past, before computers and websites, criticism arrived in a different way: through letters.
“A guy came to see us at the Rainbow Theatre right when I joined Iron Maiden (…) and he sent me a letter saying, ‘I hate the new vocalist! It’s like listening to my favorite songs being played by an air raid siren.’ And then Rod [Smallwood, manager] said, ‘Brilliant! A human air raid siren!’”
