Senjutsu Iron Maiden album , was released recently, but it has already generated a lot of discussion. The album has divided opinions , especially regarding the length of some tracks – three of them exceeding 10 minutes.
In a recent interview Bruce Dickinson recalled the song "Empire Of The Clouds," featured on The Book Of Souls (2015), which totals 18 minutes, and said that he and bassist Steve Harris are "partially responsible" for the length of the band's tracks.
“Steve is a big fan of progressive metal, just like me,” said Bruce. “I was talking to someone about this, about the different bands we both liked. We’re big fans of Jethro Tull . He loves A Passion Play and Think As A Brick , while I’m more into Aqualung and their early work. But we understand each other.”
“He’s a big fan of Genesis , Peter Gabriel , The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway ; he loves it. I’m not crazy about Genesis, but I loved, I think, Peter Gabriel’s third solo album, with songs like ‘Intruder’ and ‘No Self Control’ – scary, dark, very moody. And there was a band called Van Der Graaf Generator who were contemporaries of Genesis, and in some ways even better known than them. I loved them. And I borrowed some parts of the vocal style from their lead singer, Peter Hammill . So we both have this relationship with progressive rock, along with Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath . Steve is a big fan of Nektar and Scorpions .”
Bruce Dickinson also revealed that he didn't consider himself a big fan of either Scorpions or Judas Priest , but that he changed his mind after seeing them live. “I wasn't crazy about Judas Priest until Maiden toured with them. And the same thing with Scorpions. I never really liked Priest beyond Sad Wings Of Destiny until I toured with them and realized, 'Wow. They do some really cool stuff',” he added.
The singer also commented that he doesn't mind making long songs and used "The Parchment" as an example of something that is almost "self-hypnotic." "I have a five-and-a-half-minute tea break in the middle of 'The Parchment,'" he joked.
