Bon Scott 's death in 1980, his brother, Derek , broke his silence about the tragic event.
Derek gave his first – and, according to him, only – interview for the documentary On the Brink , about the late AC/DC . The film premiered last Monday, the 9th, on ABC Australia , and a one-minute preview was released to the public.
In the excerpt, Derek says that much of what has been written about his brother is "bullshit" and that much of what was said by the press after his death deeply upset their mother. He also justified his reluctance to talk about Bon Scott because people started asking him questions and he thought, "It's not my life."
According to Classic Rock , in the documentary, Derek recalls the terrible moment when his family received the call from Malcolm Young with the news. “[My mother] thought, 'Oh, Ron is calling to wish me a happy birthday,' which he did frequently. Malcolm didn't have time to explain because the news was spreading fast and he didn't want them to find out over the radio. So he just said, 'Ron died,'” he recounts.
Regarding the cause of death, which to this day remains shrouded in suspicious and mysterious circumstances, Derek commented: “He got bored very easily. That was the biggest problem. When he got bored, he drank. He never worried about tomorrow. Tomorrow is a new day.”
