Brian Johnson , frontman of AC/DC , has been honored with a statue in the city where he first performed with the band. The show took place on June 29, 1980, in Namur, Belgium. Check out the video at the end of this article.
Johnson joined the band after the tragic death of Bon Scott in February 1980. Before the release of the iconic album Back in Black , AC/DC played with Brian Johnson for the first time at the Palais Des Expositions in Namur.
In a video message that you can watch below, Johnson reflected: “[Namur is] a very special place for me. It was the first time I sang with AC/DC, and I was a very nervous kid. So that memory will stay with me forever, and now that you’ve built this statue. Honestly, I’m not worthy of it. Thank you, and I will gladly accept it.”
The project came to fruition through a crowdfunding campaign launched by AC/DC fans Michel Remy, Mike Davister, and Georges Boussingault, with the support of Belgian radio station RTBF Classic 21. In the video message, Johnson promised to visit Namur to see the statue in person in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, AC/DC will play their first show in seven years – and the first with Johnson back in the band – at the newly announced Power Trip festival . The event takes place in October in Indio, California, where they will share the three-day bill with Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Guns N' Roses and Tool .
