For the release of her fourth studio album, 30 pop singer Adele requested that the music streaming app Spotify remove the primary option of listening to albums in shuffle order – not only for her albums, but for all albums on the platform.
For some time now, artists have been trying to convince their audience to listen to their albums in the order they were made, and it seems that now their requests will be granted. “We don’t create albums with this much care and attention to our tracklists for nothing,” Adele wrote on her Twitter . “Our art tells a story, and our stories should be heard the way we intended.”
Brent Smith , lead singer of Shinedown , expressed his enthusiasm for the singer's initiative, which was promptly granted by Spotify. "The fact that Adele managed to get Spotify to remove the shuffle button from album pages is huge," Smith wrote on his social media. "It's quite simple, albums tell a story, whether they're conceptual or not. They're a snapshot, 'a window into time' into the hearts and minds of the artists."
“Some people aren’t going to understand the fuss or why this matters,” Smith continued. “It matters because it restores value to the music and the artist. Ultimately, it’s about respect. That being said, we applaud Adele and Spotify. MUCH RESPECT!”
According to a Spotify spokesperson , the shuffle function will still be available within the track listeners are currently listening to, but it will no longer be a primary option for the 'play' button on albums.
