The Atlanta Police Department has released new details regarding the death of former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds . The musician passed away at age 51 on August 20th after a motorcycle accident in the southeastern part of the city.
According to the new report, Hinds was riding a Harley Davidson around 11:35 p.m. (local time) when he collided with an SUV that was turning left and allegedly failed to yield at the intersection of Memorial and Boulevard streets—less than three kilometers from downtown Atlanta.
Brent Hinds was taken to the hospital alive before his death was confirmed.
Police officers who responded to the incident found Hinds unconscious at the scene. He had visible injuries to his head, arms, and body. The musician was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and died shortly afterward.
The driver remained at the scene and gave a statement to investigators. According to her, the traffic light was green at the time of the turn. However, a witness reported seeing the traffic light red at the time of the collision. This same witness, as well as another, also said that the guitarist was speeding when the accident happened. One of the calls to the emergency services was made by a person who stated they were "two cars behind" the point of impact. According to them, Brent "flew into the air" immediately after being hit, and then spun "a few times" before falling to the ground.
“It looks like his left leg bent over his right. I was two cars behind, so I didn’t see the full impact, but I heard the crash and saw him spinning,” he described. The case remains under investigation by Atlanta authorities.
